Chinese Experience Narrative

I have had the pleasure of learning Chinese for over 10 years. I lived in China for a summer in 2013 practicing the language in real life context.

Then in 2016 I returned to China on a business trip to film a documentary about “Edge People,” (creatives in hip hop, fashion, business, and more).

II continue to be fascinated by the culture and the language. Deepening my knowledge and connection to the Chinese speaking community I attend Chinese Baptist Church of West LA (CBCWLA) where I have made many new friends and expanded my pedagogical framework as to fit within the pedagogy of love. That is someone who would make personal and intentional sacrifices for others in a selfless way without seeking a personal gain.

Summer 2013 IAP

I started this very website because of my International Academic Program (“IAP”) at the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2013. Click here to see that blog series.

Undergraduate Clubs

As an undergrad I was part of many school clubs and groups related to Chinese language and culture. I was part of Asian Business and Economics Student Association (“ABESA“), Chinese Language and Culture Club (“CLACC“), and MaiDiXunSheng “麦迪逊声合唱团” Chinese Acapella Choir.

Business Trip

In 2016 I with a crew of three others ventured to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tianjin to film a documentary. That film is yet to be released publicly however a video lock is available for viewing. Please inquire if you’d like a screening.

CBCWLA

I am not a member officially but attending these events and activities has been a blessing to me and has had the effect of not only introducing me to new friends, but growing my spirits as we think of ways of building community, practicing culture, and supporting the youth.

From UCLA’s The Daily Bruin November 24, 2025 –

“Shia Fisher, a graduate student in the teaching education program who teaches mathematics at a local high school, said he hopes to start a conversation about approaching culturally responsive education in an ‘intentional’ way, without asking already under-resourced teachers to rewrite their curriculums.”
