First Step – “Physiological Needs Come First.”
If you know anything about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs you know that it is shaped like a pyramid with physiological need on the bottom.

- So, what does physiological mean?
- Why is it on the bottom?
- What else should we try to establish in our first stages of following Maslow’s guide to becoming a self-actualizing individual?
- And for most of you reading this blog: why does any of this even matter?
- Who is considered to be a self-actualizing individual?
- Why should I try to be one?

I’m sure you have many questions like the ones above. In actuality, these are questions I pose to myself. All I can really say thus far, is that achieving self-actualization just means that one has the qualities and the means to pursue knowledge, express their creativity, and give positive contributions to society. By that definition alone I really cannot understand why someone wouldn’t want to try this program. It seems that it is the same concepts and ideals I was brought up with, and has only positive implications and positive intentions.
[learn_more caption=”Okay so on with it!”]I once learned that to write a good research paper, one should gather as much facts about their topic as they possibly can, and then try to disprove their own argument. For in doing such, one will discover the holes in their beliefs and hopefully do something about it.
Here is what you need to move forward from the bottom tier according to this chart:
Air, Food, Drink, Shelter, Warmth, Sex, Sleep, etc.
Let me start by saying that I did not create this chart, but do believe all this is true. You need to have these basic needs in order to survive the test of time. Let me also address the most interesting topic in this tier. No it isn’t “Drink.” When I show people this, they immediately pause at “Sex.”
Why the heck does Abraham Maslow put this on the first level? Why does he have it at all? This is a global construct of basic humanistic needs. If we didn’t have sex, we would cease to exist. The real title of this level says biological needs too. So what is important to think about is hygiene. Nothing over the top, but a good concept of hygiene will give you a longer life, and ultimately assist in the levels above as you encounter more people and eventually take the reigns and support society.
So while I won’t tweet every time I wash my hands, I will keep you updated on my personal experiences as it pertains to this tier.
The air will be dramatically different.
The food should be tasty from what I hear.
The drink I will have to see about (water must be boiled or in a bottle for consumption).
The shelter I am at will be nice, [pictures to come.]
Warmth, and Sleep will also be a fun and interesting tale.
