Pharmacology Annotation: Homeopathic Medicine’s (Arsenicum album, Borax, and Sulphur)

BACKGROUNG: Dermatology consumer products are gargantuan in size relative to other the pharmaceutics in other branches of medicine. Because many drugs are over the counter and based on how media places such emphasis on pure smooth skin, lotions, vitamin creams and blemishes removal solutions have been formulated to enhance the quality of ones skin. Moreover there is the branch of dermatology that does not deal with cosmetic or preventative care at all, there is a section of dermatology that deals with skin illness and treatments. This field is often referred to as dermatotherapy. Not too long ago, the selling of skin care products was a popular practice or, rather profession, which explains the proliferation of pharmaceutics in the skin care department today. Now in the 21st century with the digital age moving at individual pace, and maintaining self-reliance via Internet and other mobility options, the average consumer may view skin care products as more of a person decision and medication to buy on their own. Despite that perhaps misperceived conception that items such as lotions are not pharmaceutics. This notion in a scientific / medical point of view is false; a chemically created solution (lab manufacture and hopefully FDA approved) is considered a pharmaceutic. Some lotions for example require a prescription as they may contain active ingredients. Some of the top companies in the industry include: Ferndale, Sanofi (formally known as Dermik), Quinnova.

Today we will be discussing a drug used to treat a dermatologic condition. This drug would not be used for cosmetic reason. Lichen planus is a skin disease with no real known cause. This disease is known to produce lesions with flat-topped papules. Effected areas will display black and brown, extremely itchy, inflammations. Other symptoms include: moth rash, scaly patches, small purple or pink bumps, genital itching/rash, scaly patches and more. As with many dermatotherapies treatment for Lichen planus has a broad range of homeopathic remedies. Here we will describe homeopathic substances, and a few preparations that go with Lichen planus as a treatment; Arsenicum album, Borax, and Sulphur. Homeopathy is sometimes confused with medications that cure diseases. What homeopathy truly is, is really more of a ‘cure like’ affect. Which is to say it may be a drug that creates the symptoms a healthier person may have. Although created over 200 years ago in Germany and practiced in the United States since the early 19th century, homeopathic medicine is relatively new and thus does not have a vast amount of research regarding treatments. This is somewhat of a controversial field of medicine that requires a larger scope of medical understanding in scientific, physic, and mathematical realms. Doctors of Osteopathic medicine are more likely to pursue homeopathic approaches in delivering patient care.

A perfect example of this is the preparation required in creating Arsenicum album, which is exactly what it sounds like. A highly skilled doctor will dilute arsenic trioxide, which is a highly toxic inorganic compound. Arsenic is a pesticide used to kill rodents in pest control, as many know. Stupendous comprehension of the “Laws of Similar” is more than recommended in treating for arsenic poisoning. The professional, will dilute arsenic trioxide generally until there are no more molecules left. Scientists will conduct serial dilutions of arsenic until there is no arsenic within a pill (though some poorly prepared pills were reported in India leading to arsenic poisoning). This medicine is rated in the top 15 recommended important remedies in homeopathy. Treating anxieties, digestive disorders, and mucosal inflammation.

Borax has a chemical name of sodium borate or disodium tetraborate (a compound of a mineral and a salt of boric acid). This mineral is used for a plethora of products in the world no just limited to medicine. Broax is used to make certain glues (Elmer’s glue) and is also a food additive. Borox is used for fluride detoxification, as fire retardant, and stopping car radiator / engine block leaks. We could continue but the list is long, the point is we do put borax into the body from time to time to treat certain ailments. Lastly Sulfur can be found in many forms and used in many was as well. Used in combinations of atoms to create compounds. In homeopathic medicine we recognize there is no real side effect for treatments, from the perspective that we are aiming to creating an effect. The adverse qualities arise when we miscalculate a procedure or medicine in and cause pain and suffering due to that.
